Tin Tin

Tin Tin was the first English comic that I ever read. Thanks to Pudukkottai Mount Zion school library. When I first came to know about the Tin Tin movie, it rekindled my childhood memories. When I came to know that it was directed by Spielberg, I couldn't resist my urge to watch this movie. Even though every scene in the comic book is in my memory, but I still went to theater to watch this movie.   I believe I was the only single adult in the movie hall.  I didn't mind it, once the movie started I forget the whole world and went into the movie.  I would suggest everyone to watch this movie.

It was early 90's. I still remember those days. We were very crazy about cricket. On a weekday we play for minimum three hours and during the weekend more than 8 hours. We prefer to play with tennis ball/rubber ball rather than a cricket ball. The reason is quite simple. The cost of a cricket ball is much higher (we buy used tennis ball form a local tennis club) and we didn't have oil bat. All we had was some local made sub standard bats. A decent cricket bat costs around 100 Rs, which was a very big amount for us. It was a dream for every one of us to own a cricket bat. Only one or 2 in our gang could manage to buy a proper bat. Rest of us depended on Karupaiyya Aasary(க‌ருப்பையா ஆசாரி).
Karupaiyaa is a well know carpenter in our locality. For Rs 25 he will give us a custom made bat. The bats are mostly made of neem/guva wood. After a long struggle I managed to save Rs 25. Now, It was my turn. I went to his workshop and asked for bat. As he was busy with some other work he asked me come latter. When I went to his work shop for the second time, he was crafting my bat. Once my bat was fully ready I was totally disappointed. The bat didn't look like a regular bat. The handle was longer and the blade was relatively smaller and narrower. I was not happy with the bat and I was not ready to pay Rs 25. He said "அடிச்சு ஆடுற‌துக்கு இந்த‌ பேட்டு ந‌ல்லா இருக்கும்" (For playing powerfull shots this bat will be very good). I was not ready to hear his words. After a small panchyat I paid him Rs 25 and got the bat. Initially I was not ready to take this bat to the ground. Since all the other bat in our team was broken, I took this bat to the ground. For the first couple of overs we struggled with the new bat. Once we got hold of the bat, hitting the ball was very easy. What Karupaiyya said was true. Our average score in a 12 over match raised to 100 from 60. The bat was a huge hit among us. I think Karupaiyya Aasary should have copy righted the design. The mongoose bat which Mathew Hayden used/using was much similar to the one which Karupaiyya has designed. 16 years before I got this bat for just Rs 25. Today mongoose bats are sold for Rs 23,000. Sharing Auto and Reusing codes

Its 4.00 AM. I’m the last person to get out of the Train. And as usual no auto was available. There was a small queue in front of the prepaid auto counter. For every 5 minutes an auto comes and the traffic police who was on duty asked the people to share the auto. When my turn came, I was asked to join 3 other persons. Since there was no other immediate option, I agreed for that. Of the 4 people, I’m the last person to get down. When I got down, the auto driver asked me the full fare from. Since I shared with the 3 other persons, I was not ready to pay the full amount. The normal auto fare is 80 Rs. He already charged 100Rs from the other 3 passengers. And now he was asking me 80 Rs. A small argument started between us. Since I was not fluent in Malayalam and I was not ready to spoil my morning, I gave up the argument and paid him 80 Rs.

A small question popped up in my mind? I have a personal code bin; in this code bin, I have all types of reusable piece of codes. Whenever possible, I try to use the code. When I use the reusable code, should I need to charge the customer for the full amount?

Reusing code is something similar to sharing the Auto isn’t?

Note: I’m not running my own company. The above question just popped up in my mind. The postings on this site are my own and don't necessarily represent my present or past or future employers position, strategies or opinion.

Charles Rane Vs Chris Fletcher

Sometimes back, I was watched Wisley Snipes, Passanger 57. Bruce payne (Chrales Rane) played the villain role. When I saw Bruce on the screen, suddenly Chris Fletcher of Dasavatharam came into my mind. In every aspect Charles Rane reminded me Chris Fletcher. I think Kamal should have taken Charles Rane as the model to develop the Fletcher character.

Adieu and Arrival and a Movie

For the past few weeks I have been quite busy. Several expected and unexpected events happened in my life.
As my father got retired from his service on May 2008 my parents moved to Tirunelveli. At last 23 years of life in Pudukkottai came to an end. A new place, new neighbors, new environment. I don’t know how they will adjust to this new environment. My Grandfather after his retirement from service left Nagapatinam, where he lived for 35+ years and settled in Palavoor. My father after retiring his retirement from service left Pudukkottai, Where he lived for 23+ years and settled in Tirunelveli. So What I will do?

Back in Bangalore, my assignment with the American Bank came to an end. Now I’m to a victim of Subprime crisis. The Bank wants to cut it its IT expenditure. So they reduced the team size. By Dec 31, 2008 my contract came to an end. The Resource Management Group of my organization asked me to go to Kochi. Since I don’t have any commitments I too agreed to work in Kochi Branch. From Jan 5, 2009 I’m working in Kochi and again for an America based financial institution. Work is pretty good here. Currently working on R7 and soon they are planning to move to R8. So I expect some good learning here. Initially I was afraid for the food in Kochi. But Inside the office the food is not a problem. I have fairly good choices (but the cost is more) and even outside the office I can manage.
Last week (Jan 15, 2009) when I was travelling to Tirunelveli, I happened to see the movie Jayamkondan (Vinay and Bhavana). The directory/story writer copied the story from the English movie “A Good Year” (Russell Crowe, I don’t remember the lead actress name). Previously our kollywood people only copy the successful/more visible English/other foreign language movies (example: Durai – Gladiator, Aanai – Transporter2 etc) . But these days the trend is getting changed. If the story can be adopted for Indian/Tamil audience then they take/steal it.

A small Comparison - Part II

A Small Comparison -Part I
Work Culture: In my current company, Except for one or two people, rest of the team leaves the office exactly at the scheduled logout time. Whereas at my previous company only one or two leaves at the scheduled logout time. The relationship with my manager is more professional/formal in my current organization. In my previous organization its more informal and bit personal. Even after quiting my previous company I still have contact with my managers.
Linguistic Split: At the time of leaving my previous organization, of the 25+ people only 2 were non Tamilians. In my current team Telugu speaking people forms the major part of the team followed by Tamil, Hindi and Kannada. People from groups based on the language they speak. The entire team looks bit polarized :(. Each group is further divided into sub groups.
If a team has 10 Telugu speaking people there will be a maximum of 3 groups, if a team has 10 Mallus, all the 10 will be of the same group. If a team has 10 Tamilians then there can be more than8 groups :). Tamil people lacks unity among them. People fight like kids in the team. I have never seen these kind of split in my previous company. It was only top management versus others :).

A postmortem.

Today at my office we had small session with the HR peoples. And as usual this session too had some games. I was made as a captain for one team. The game and its rules were very simple. But still we lost all 3 the game. After the session, I just did a postmortem of the entire game that we played. Here are the mistakes that I/We did

1. At first game we didn't have any game plan/Strategy. Every team member was in offensive mode. If a strike is successful then we will get maximum points, but the probability of getting a successful strike is very less. Few made good score, many missed (including me).

2. In the second game, we were given a target and asked to achieve it. Now we started to feel the pressure. But still most of the team members played offensively. The members who had good score in the first game failed to get same or a greater score in the second game. They had over confidence over their skills. When I asked them to play defensively they were not ready to hear my words. We were not even able to complete the game :(.

3. Even in the third game we were give a target and asked to achieve it. The pressure was immense. We were a team of 13, each one has to score at least 12 points to get the achieve the target. Now I made the entire team to play defensively. But still the people had over confidence over their skills. Most of the team members didn't follow the strategy that we devised. And even in this game too we lost.

The main problem that we had was we didn't bother about winning the game. We are not going to lose any thing if we lost this game. This was our/my mindset. Second thing was, most of my team members were senior to me. I couldn't force them to obey my words. Or to tell in other words I couldn't get the work done from the team :(.

The lesson that I learnt from this game is when we take the leadership role and start a new project
1. Have a plan/strategy.
2. Make sure that the entire team follows your word.

3. Have the determination to win

A small Comparison

I started to work in IT industry almost 3 years and 2 months ago. At first I worked for a start up and now working for India's biggest IT company. 14 months back when I joined in my current organization except for Lotus Notes every thing else looked different. The way in which I/we worked/ how things happened in the previous organization was totally different from how it is happening here.
My first surprise was the head count. In my previous organization the biggest team size was 4. And most of the time I worked as one man army. The total organization strength was around 25. When I came here, I was surprised to see a team of 40 programmers. I never expected a Lotus notes team of 40 developers. Further around 1500+ developers/testers/support personals are also seated in the same campus.
Dress code: While working in previous organization, I never follow the dress code. During weekday I wore Jeans pant, I will not tuck in my shirt , Never wear shoes to the office. Few of my friends were also in the same league. Even the management did not mind it. For them the work has to be done. Or I think its the freedom that I/we had there. Here, every thing is in reverse. Even on weekend I see people coming in formals. During weekday I'm following or try to follow the dress code. When I don't follow, I look odd in the team.
Process:
Process.
In my previous organization the only process that I followed regularly was filling Time sheet :). In projects that I worked, I had access to production environment. When ever the user asks for changes/enhancements, at times directly I had worked on the production database. At times we worked based on customer oral request too. I the beginning we didn't track the changes that we made. Latter we had some thing called Change request and Release notes (Word document) to track the changes. From the management perspective to have CR and RN as word document might be use full but from the developer point of view its not use full. In one of the project that I worked, after the main release we had more than 25 CRs. I'm the only person who have fairly good (Complete) knowledge of the application (Since I designed the application). When we started to get more and more CR, I couldn't remember what I did in each module. No module have proper documentation.
In my current project, ever request is properly tracked and stored. Every release has its corresponding documentation. Further all the CR's are tacked in notes application, which make them more searchable. We don't have designer access to UAT and production server. Only for the development server we have designer access. For every deployment we need to have 2 approval from management team and admin team will do the deployment. The documentation work may be painstaking, but it protect us.
Technology: I would say any one who starts his/her career with a start up organization is lucky. He/she can learn a lot in start ups. At times we worked for more than 18 hours a day. In 2 years of time we learned a lot. I feel in big organization at the entry level we cannot learn as we learn in a start up.
Soft skills : Any one who starts his career with Big companies can develop their soft skills very quickly. In my current assignment, I need to interact with the my client on daily basis. Either through instant messenger or phone calls. Where as in my previous organization only my manger used to have daily interaction with the customer and I interact with him the customer very rarely.

Extract Dr.Ramadoss's yesterdays statement.
//சமுதாயத்தில் தற்போது ஒரு புதிய ஆபத்தான ஏற்றத்தாழ்வு உருவாகி வருகிறது. பிளஸ் டூ தேர்வு முடிவுகளில் கடந்த 8 ஆண்டுகளாக அதிக வேலைவாய்ப்பு உள்ள முக்கியமான பாடங்களில் முன்னேறிய வகுப்பினர்களே மாநில அளவில் முதல் மூன்று இடங்களை பெற்று வருகின்றனர்.அதிக முக்கியத்துவம் இல்லாத நர்சிங், உணவு பதப்படுத்துதல், பயிர் உற்பத்தி உள்ளிட்ட பாடப்பிரிவு களில் மட்டும் தாழ்த்தப்பட்ட மாணவர்கள் முதல் மதிப்பெண்களை பெற்று வருகின்றனர். இந்த இந்த பிரிவினர் இந்த இந்த பாடங்கள்தான் பயில வேண்டும் என்று பாகுபாடு உள்ளதோ என்று எண்ணத் தோன்றுகிறது//

If Dr.Ramadoss continues to give statement like this in future we can expect some thing like the below one.
"ச‌முதாய‌த்தில் உள்ள‌ ஆபத்தான ஏற்றத்தாழ்வை ச‌ரி செய்ய இனி முன்னேறிய வகுப்பினர்கள் யாரும் அதிக வேலைவாய்ப்பு உள்ள முக்கியமான பாடப்பிரிவுக‌ளிள் சேர‌க்கூடாது. சேர்ந்த்த‌லும் முத‌ல் மூன்று ம‌திப்பென் பெற‌க்கூடாது."

Jokes apart, I'm not against any caste or religion. Its not the caste that determines the first mark, but the hard work that the student puts. I'm sure that Dr.Ramadoss knows this. I'm too using Rajinikanths word "People are equal to God. They cannot be fooled and will not remain silent if you continue to act in such manner" (Thalivar said this during hogenakkal fasting).

Write P.Ragavan of Kizaku padipakkam in his blog writes a series on how he and Badri started Kizaku, What are the Problems that they faced in the initial days.
Today I came across a interesting article about copy right in his blog.
This is how the posting starts.
"ரத்தம் சொட்டச் சொட்ட காயம் பட்டபிறகு, செய்த தவறின் அடிப்படைக் காரணம், அறியாமை என்று தெரியவரும்போது வலியை மீறிய வேதனை ஒன்று வரும். ரத்த காயத்தைவிடத் தீவிரமானது அது. அனுபவித்துப் பார்த்தால் மட்டுமே இது விளங்கும்". I 100% agree with P.Ragavan.

Browsing in iWay.

In all the iWays that I browse I face some common problem(other than the pop-up ads).

1. After signing into Gmail, I need to manually refresh to get the content loaded.

2. Most of the Tamil fonts are not supported.

3. When I log in into Orkut, the content doesn't load immediately like Gmail I need to manually refresh and when hit the back button I get the following error most of the time.
